Message from the Dean (Dean’s Welcome Address)

I am pleased to welcome you to the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health (FNBSPH). The School was established at the inception of the University and named after the illustrious Ghanaian Public Health scholar, Fred Newton Binka. FNBSPH is located on the premises of the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe.

We run undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Public Health. There are six programmes in the Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) portfolio. We also run the Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Philosophy (MPHIL) in Applied Epidemiology and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in Public Health.

We pride ourselves in being a School that is committed to the highest standards of teaching, learning and research. This is exemplified in the quality of our faculty and alumni. A key component of teaching, learning and research at FNBSPH is community-based practice.

We collaborate with several local and international organizations and our biggest local collaborators are the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health. Through our close working relationships with the two institutions, our students gain extensive exposure to the workings of the health system during their training. We have collaborations with the World Health Organization, the United Nations Development Programme, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, McGill University in Canada, Rutgers and Campbell University in the United States of America.

Our location in Hohoe gives us access to hard-to-reach and underserved communities in the northern Volta and Oti Regions of Ghana. In these communities, our students, faculty and visiting scholars have the opportunity to learn and practice public health in its most authentic form.

The school is part of the Nkabom Collaborative (https://www.mcgill.ca/africa-agrifood-collaborative/). This is a partnership with six institutions in Ghana, McGill University in Canada and the Mastercard Foundation. Through this partnership, we are developing new graduate programmes and incorporating entrepreneurship into our training curricula. I am excited to be leading the school through these exciting times and have the pleasure of inviting you to be part of us.
