Dr. Mawuli Kushitor is a Lecturer with the Department of Health Policy Planning and Management at the School of Public Health, University of Health and Allied Sciences. Prior to joining the University, he worked with senior researchers from the University of Ghana to explore the influences of the built environment and on Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) outcomes within urban and rural spaces. He currently teaches courses in Leadership and Management of Health Systems and Occupational Health and Safety at the Undergraduate level. He is also involved in graduate teaching on the course Population Studies.
Education
Dr. Kushitor holds a PhD in Population Studies from the University of Ghana. He received his undergraduate and Master’s degrees from the same University. He has held a visiting scholar position to the Pennsylvania State University as part of a William and Flora Hewlett Foundation scholarship he received during the final stage as a PhD Candidate.
Work Experience
Before joining the University Community, Dr Kushitor worked as a Principal Research Assistant (PRA) in the Regional Institute of Population Studies (RIPS), University of Ghana under the Cardiovascular Research unit for a period of 2 years. He was involved primarily in designing studies, analyzing and drafting research papers related to CVDS. At RIPS, he was part of a team of researchers that investigated on the complex interplay between the environments, the health system, biomedical, (epi-genetics influences on obesity and T2D amongst Ghanaians in Ghana and Ghanaians in Europe on a project titled: Research on Obesity and Diabetes Amongst Ghanaian Migrants (RODAM Study). He was involved in another project with RIPS titled Developing a Community Based Cardiovascular care in Ghana: A therapeutic Approach to Hypertension Management in Ga Mashie, Accra before joining UHAS in 2019.
Science/Research Output
His research is primarily focused on the influences of the built environment on CVDs, Ghana’s primary health care system and sexual reproductive health within the urban poor context. Other areas of interest include the Community Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS), Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) within both urban and rural poor settings.
