PROF. MARGARET KWEKU

Prof Kweku

Professor Margaret Kweku is a clinical epidemiologist at the School of Public Health and former Acting Dean from February 2015 to July 2019. During her tenure as Dean the SPH, the School established a number of programmes including:

  • A review the Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) curriculum to include new courses for the Sandwich programme.
  • Re-accreditation of the BPH programme from the National Accreditation Board (NAB).
  • An NAB-accredited Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Applied Epidemiology and Master of Public Health (MPH).

She currently teaches courses and supervises students on the MPH (General), MPH (Epidemiology and Disease control) and MPhil (Applied Epidemiology) programmes. She also teaches and supervises students on undergraduate programmes and has served on a number of committees of the University.

Education

Prof Kweku obtained her medical degree from Kharkov State Medical Institute, Ukraine in1991. She also holds MPH (1998) and MPhil (Public Health) (2004) degrees from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a PhD (Infectious Diseases Epidemiology) from the University of London, UK.  She is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (since 2010).

Work Experience

Margaret served as a Medical Officer at Ho Regional Hospital (1993-1994) and Hohoe District Hospital (1994-1996).  She was appointed District Director of Health Services- Hohoe District (1996-2001), Kadjebi District (2000-2001) and Ho Municipality (2001-2004).

Science/Research Output

She was Principal Investigator (PI) on the Baseline Survey of School-Based Hand-washing Campaign using School Sourced Tippy Taps in Basic Public Schools in the Volta Region in collaboration with UNICEF (Ghana).  She was also a key player in the UHAS-GHS Partnership project with Columbia University (USA) and Doris Duke Foundation on CHPS+ Implementation in the Volta Region, which has recently been completed. She also oversaw the SPH component of the UHAS-Yonsei Joint Project on Knowledge Mobilization to benefit communities in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Main Areas of Research 

Clinical Trials, Community-based interventions, Monitoring and Evaluation of Health programmes and policy, and implementation research.
