DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND BIOSTATISTICS

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (EBS) is one of the four departments in the School of Public Health. It was established to run three programmes:

• Health Information
• Disease Control
• Environmental Health

The department has staff strength of nineteen faculty out of whom eight are on study leave pursuing their PhD programmes, four are on part-time basis and seven are resident. Of the faculty on study leave three teach on various courses when they have time available.
Regarding teaching, our faculty teaches both core and elective courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The departmental elective courses are taken from level 300, while the core courses cut across all the four levels.

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY THE DEPARTMENT
Besides teaching, our faculty also takes part in research formulated by the School, Department or at the individual levels. We also are engaged in community service.
At the School level, the Department is part of the WASH, CHPS+ and the Yonsei-UHAS projects. We are also involved in supervising students in the field when they are doing their vocational training and their project works.

CHALLENGES FACED BY THE DEPARTMENT

• Due to our staff on study leave, we are engaging part-time lecturers
• The HODs office too small for exam scripts after marking and for other activities
• The Department needs a printer for the HOD to ease the traffic at the admin office
• Laptop for each faculty

STRATEGIES FOR THE DEPARTMENT

• To formulate research topics to be worked on by faculty
• To carry out research and bring in income for department
• To organise seminars of important issues in research and teaching
• To present research findings at international conferences and in publications
• Target for each faculty is at least one publication per year
