Gideon Kye-Duodu joined the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho in 2013 as a lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health in Hohoe. He was appointed acting head of the department from January 2014 to December 2015. Within the period, he chaired the Curriculum Development Committee that successfully designed two postgraduate academic curricula. He has also served on committees and boards of the University and provided extension services to organizations and communities in the University’s catchment areas.
Education
Gideon Kye-Duodu is a graduate of the Ghana Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training (GFELTP) with expertise in disease outbreak investigations, epidemiological study designs and public health surveillance system evaluation. He has led/co-led a number of large disease outbreaks, conducted disease surveillance system evaluations and public health studies. His academic training is in Medical Laboratory and Applied Epidemiology. He is currently a PhD Fellow at the WHO/TDR Implementation Research Postgraduate Regional Training Centre in the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, Legon.
Work Experience
Gideon worked with the Ghana Health Service as the head of the laboratory department in the District Hospital, Begoro before joining the University in 2013 as a Lecturer. He teaches courses in epidemiology, public health surveillance and fundamental laboratory methods and supervises dissertations of both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of the School of Public Health. He also provides similar trainings for frontline health workers of the Ghana Health Service/Veterinary Services Division in many regions of Ghana.
Since his appointment, Gideon has served on a number of committees and boards of the School of Public Health and the University. He was a member of the School management, the coordinator of the Vocational Training Programme and Public Health Seminar series and also represented the School at the Business and Executive Committee (BEC), Appointments Committee (APMC) and the Academic Board of the University.
Science/Research Output
His broad public health areas of interest are in applied epidemiology, implementation research and biomedical science. More specifically, his research interests are in Paediatric HIV infections, HIV co-morbidities, Infectious Diseases of Poverty, Neglected Tropical Diseases and mobile technology in health (mHealth).
His vision is to work with colleagues and communities to provide solutions to the myriad of public health challenges through the conduct of innovative and cutting-edge research. Ultimately, he seeks to apply the knowledge and experiences gained in community service and in the teaching the next generation of public health officers.
